
Yankee Stadium’s transition to LED lighting in 2014 was not only a milestone in stadium technology, it became a proving ground for how performance sports lighting should be engineered and delivered. As one of the earliest Major League Baseball stadiums in North America to adopt an LED system, the New York Yankees took a bold leap into the future of high-performance sports lighting. GigaTera was selected to replace a mix of 1,000W to 2,000W HID fixtures with high-output SUFA-A LED luminaires, offering greater optical control and significant energy savings.
The original system of 884 HID fixtures across three systems was replaced with 692 individually addressable SUFA-A units. Each fixture head was equipped with modular optics and glare-control technology, allowing 1,384 total aiming panels to be precisely directed across the field. This project set the precedent for how to aim, control, and design sports lighting at the scale of a major league stadium.
GigaTera’s dual-head design was critical in this project. Unlike traditional single-head fixtures, the SUFA-A brings double the aiming points, which allowed our lighting designers to spread out glare clusters across the catwalk and cathedral-like mounting zones. Additionally, our innovative optic design used a narrow uni-directional beam to minimize stray lighting and glare. This detailed approach improved both vertical illumination for players and shadow reduction across the infield and outfield.
On-site engineers executed a full aiming plan to ensure that each panel contributed to consistent coverage while minimizing discomfort for players and camera operators. Field-level tests confirmed the reduction in glare intensity compared to the legacy system, and broadcasters noted the visible improvement in visual clarity and motion tracking.
Before: The previous HID system. Harsh glare clusters and overlapping beams caused discomfort for players and uneven brightness across the stands. Traditional metal halide lamps generated uncontrolled spill light, reducing visual clarity and creating shadow pockets on the field.

The Yankee Stadium’s LED sports lighting system was a critical upgrade at a crossroads of technical expertise, pioneering innovation, and efficient sustainability. Upon installation, GigaTera’s system delivered a tested flicker rate of 0.2%, enabling replays and ultra-high-speed capture up to 1,000fps without visible artifacts. This made Yankee Stadium one of the first professional sports venues in the U.S. to offer broadcast-grade slow motion under LED.
The GigaTera sports lighting system continues to illuminate the stadium at nearly the same illumination levels as ten years prior. Nearly a decade later, the GigaTera lights at Yankee Stadium continue to shine with the same intensity as the day they were installed. Field measurements confirm that the system has retained exceptional lumen output, thanks to a robust design and optimized thermal management.
